Look for evidence in ordinary life
The strongest clue is usually a repeated behavior, not a demographic category.
What gets used
Upgrade, repair, refill, organize, or complement something they reach for every week.
What gets postponed
Remove logistics from an experience, repair, visit, class, or household task they already want.
What gets mentioned
Listen for a specific author, ingredient, tool, place, craft, routine, or small frustration.

Use the no-clutter ladder
Move down the ladder until the idea matches the person's space, habits, and comfort with receiving help.
- A consumable they already enjoy.
- A replacement for something worn out.
- A service with the scheduling handled.
- A specific experience with costs and logistics covered.
- A contribution to a cause they chose.
- A letter, recording, recipe, or restored family artifact.

Check the hidden burden before buying
A gift can quietly require storage, maintenance, subscription fees, travel, installation, or emotional performance.
Space
Where will it live, and what may need to leave for it to fit?
Upkeep
Who refills, cleans, charges, assembles, transports, or cancels it?
Choice
Would a specific invitation, flexible credit, or direct question feel more respectful?
