Notice what changed
A tradition can be loved and still no longer fit. Start with the constraint rather than assigning blame.
Time
The ritual consumes preparation or travel time that the household no longer has.
People
A family structure, age, health need, distance, or loss has changed the experience.
Meaning
The action remains, but the reason everyone once valued it has faded.

Choose keep, change, pause, release, or begin
Naming the choice makes the conversation less absolute. A pause is not a permanent verdict.
- Keep it exactly when the meaning still outweighs the effort.
- Change the scale, timing, location, or person responsible.
- Pause it for one year and notice what is missed.
- Release it with a photograph, recipe card, story, or final gathering.
- Begin one small ritual that fits the household now.

Close it with gratitude, not a vote count
Different people can hold different memories. Explain the practical decision and make room for disagreement without reopening the entire plan.
Say what it gave
Name the connection, comfort, play, faith, or family history the tradition carried.
Save one artifact
Keep the recipe, ornament, photograph, story, or object that carries the best part forward.
Name what replaces the work
Protect the rest, gathering, travel margin, or new ritual created by letting go.
